Ausbildung Salary, German Taxes, and Sending Money Home

One of the first questions every Filipino Ausbildung applicant asks is: “How much will I actually take home each month – and how much can I send back to my family?”

This guide answers that question in full. We explain how German training salaries work, what deductions you will see on your payslip, how much you will have left after living expenses, and the best ways to send remittances back to the Philippines.

Understanding Your Salary: Gross vs Net

Your Ausbildungsvertrag states your gross salary (Bruttolohn). What you receive in your bank account is your net salary (Nettolohn), after mandatory deductions:

DeductionRateWhat It Covers
Income tax (Lohnsteuer)0-15% depending on salaryFederal and state taxes
Health insurance (Krankenversicherung)~7.3%Full German statutory health coverage
Pension insurance (Rentenversicherung)~9.3%German state pension
Unemployment (Arbeitslosenversicherung)~1.3%Unemployment benefit entitlement
Care insurance (Pflegeversicherung)~1.7%Nursing care support
Total deductions (Azubis)~18-22%All social contributions and tax

đź’ˇ Pro Tip: Auzbi salaries are low enough that most trainees in Year 1 pay almost zero income tax due to the basic tax allowance (Grundfreibetrag – currently around «11,604/year).

Net: What You Actually Take Home

ProfessionGross Year 1Net Year 1Gress Year 3Net Year 3
Nursing (Pflegefachmann)€1,250/mo~€1,20/mo€1,500/mo~€1,200/mo
IT (Fachinformatiker)€850/mo~€710/mo€1,050/mo~€870/mo
Hotel (Hotelfachmann)€750/mo~€635/mo€950/mo~€800/mo
Elderly Care (Altenpfleger)€1,100/mo~€900/mo€1,350/mo~€1,090/mo

Reading Your German Payslip (Gehaltsabrechnung)

Key terms on your monthly payslip:

  • Bruttoentgelt / Bruttolohn – Your gross salary
  • Steuerklasse – Your tax class (most new arrivals are Steuerklasse 1)
  • Lohnsteuer – Income tax deducted
  • SV-Beiträge – Total social insurance contributions
  • Nettoentgelt / Nettolohn – The amount transferred to your bank account

Annual Tax Return: You May Get Money Back

Every year you can file a voluntary tax return (Steuererklärung). For most Azubi4, this results in a refund. Common reasons:

  • Work-related expenses (Werbungskosten): textbooks, transport to Berufsschule, work clothing
  • Moving costs related to your Ausbildung
  • Language course costs
  • Computer and phone used for Berufsschule

Average tax refund: «200 – «800 per year. You have up to 4 years to file retroactively.

⚠️ Watch Out: Use a free app like WISO Steuer or Elster for simple cases. For more complex situations, a Lohnsteuerhilfeverein (tax assistance association) charges approx. €50-150/year & secures much larger refunds.

Sending Remittances to the Philippines

How Much Can You Realistically Send?

After living expenses, most trainees can send «50 – C€300 per month depending on profession and city. In Year 3 of nursing or elderly care, some trainees send «300-500/month.

💡 Pro Tip: Wise consistently offers the best mid-market exchange rate for EUR to PHP. A €100 transfer via Wise typically yields PHP 6,100-6,300 vs PHP 5,700-5,900 with traditional banks. Over a year, this difference adds up significantly.
